This is not a bad effort at all! Well done. You could do with some more contrast between lights and darks. Look at the grooves in the body of the grenade in the ref photo, then look at your drawing. They need to be much darker, using a softer graphite pencil. And you are correct, a smooth paper like Bristol Board would probably help. Otherwise, keep practicing!
